How to use it
- 1
Measure on M-mode echo. LVIDd from leading edge of anterior to leading edge of posterior wall at end-diastole (at R-wave on ECG).
- 2
Measure LVIDs. At narrowest point in systole.
- 3
Note limitations. Teicholz assumes spherical LV. Regional wall motion abnormalities make it inaccurate. Biplane Simpson's rule preferred.
When to use it
- Quick EF estimation when 2D echo quality is limited
- M-mode is more reproducible than 2D in poor acoustic windows.
- Serial monitoring
- Use the same method for serial comparison. Mix of methods introduces error.
- Not for regional dysfunction
- Post-MI with wall motion abnormalities: use biplane Simpson's method (more accurate).
