Moderate risk
Framingham ATP III (Wilson 1998). Use QRISK3 for UK populations.
How to use it
- 1
Enter demographics and labs. Age, sex, fasting lipid panel. HDL and total cholesterol in mmol/L.
- 2
Record BP and treatment status. Treated hypertension adds more points than untreated (same BP) in some versions.
- 3
Apply clinical judgement. UK clinical practice prefers QRISK3. Framingham may underestimate risk in South Asian populations.
When to use it
- Primary CVD prevention assessment
- Identifies patients who benefit from statin therapy (NICE threshold: 10-yr CVD risk ≥10% for primary prevention).
- Shared decision-making
- Use with patient to illustrate how smoking cessation, BP control, and statins reduce 10-year risk.
- Note regional differences
- European SCORE uses mortality not events. QRISK3 is preferred in the UK and accounts for ethnicity.
A reference for clinicians and students, not medical advice. A score supports a decision; it does not make one. Check every result against the patient in front of you and your local protocol.
