Aortic Valve Area (Continuity) calculator
Result
0.95cm²
Severe AS (< 1.0 cm²)
AVA = LVOT area × (LVOT VTI / AV VTI). Normal AVA 3–4 cm². Severe: <1.0 cm² (<0.6 cm²/m² indexed).
How to use it
- 1
Measure LVOT diameter. Parasternal long axis in early systole, inner edge to inner edge. Square for area: π × (D/2)².
- 2
Trace LVOT VTI. Pulsed-wave Doppler 5 mm proximal to aortic valve in apical 5-chamber view.
- 3
Trace AV VTI. Continuous-wave Doppler through aortic valve from apical window, multiple views for maximum velocity.
When to use it
- Quantifying aortic stenosis severity
- AVA <1.0 cm² = severe AS. Combine with mean gradient (>40 mmHg) and Vmax (>4 m/s) to classify severity.
- Low-flow low-gradient AS
- AVA <1.0 but gradient <40 mmHg: check indexed AVA and stroke volume. Consider dobutamine stress echo.
- TAVI planning
- Anatomical and functional assessment; AVA from Doppler supplemented by CT annular measurement.
