1568kcal/day (BMR)
Most accurate formula for clinical use
ADA/AND: Mifflin-St Jeor is preferred over Harris-Benedict for predicting RMR.
How to use it
- 1
Mifflin-St Jeor formula. RMR = 10×W + 6.25×H − 5×A + 5 (male) or −161 (female).
- 2
Overfeeding risk in ICU. Target 80–100% of measured/estimated needs in acute phase. Overfeeding worsens outcomes.
- 3
Stress factors in hospitalised patients. ICU: multiply by 1.2–1.5 for moderate illness. Burns: up to 2.0×.
When to use it
- Preferred for BMI > 30
- Mifflin-St Jeor most accurate for obese patients (ADA recommendation).
- Indirect calorimetry not available
- Gold standard is measured REE by indirect calorimetry — Mifflin is the best predictor when IC unavailable.
- Weight loss programme
- Set calorie deficit from TDEE based on Mifflin BMR.
