Corrected Calcium calculator
Result
2.20mmol/L
Normocalcaemia (2.20–2.65 mmol/L)
How to use it
- 1
Albumin-bound calcium is ~45%. Low albumin → falsely low total calcium. Correction estimates ionised fraction.
- 2
Formula. Corrected Ca = measured Ca + 0.02 × (40 − albumin g/L). UK units.
- 3
Ion exchange. For albumin <25 or >45, or acid-base disturbances, measure ionised calcium (ABG) directly.
When to use it
- Hypoalbuminaemia
- ICU, liver disease, nephrotic syndrome — total calcium always needs albumin correction.
- Hypercalcaemia work-up
- Corrected Ca > 3.0: urgent treatment. 2.65–3.0: work up for PTH/malignancy.
- Post-thyroidectomy
- Monitor corrected Ca for hypoparathyroidism q6h for 24h post-op.
