Oxygen Delivery (DO₂) calculator
Result
924mL/min
Normal (700–1000 mL/min)
CaO₂ = 18.5 mL/dL
How to use it
- 1
DO₂ = CO × CaO₂ × 10. CaO₂ from Hgb and SaO₂; CO from SwanGanz or echo.
- 2
Normal DO₂ ~1000 mL/min. Tissues extract ~25% (VO₂ ~250 mL/min). Below DO₂ ~400: O₂ extraction becomes critical.
- 3
DO₂ below critical threshold. Anaerobic metabolism begins → lactate rises.
When to use it
- Septic shock goals
- ScvO₂ ≥70% = adequate DO₂ to VO₂ ratio. Guides transfusion vs. inotropes vs. vasopressors.
- Optimising haemodynamics
- Which lever: CO (fluid/inotrope), Hgb (transfusion), or SaO₂ (ventilation)?
- Cardiac surgery
- CPB flow targets set to maintain DO₂ >270 mL/min/m².
