Abstract
Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection is a major factor in the development of cervical cancer. Parity is one of the reproductive factors suspected to be associated with HPV infection, although previous studies have shown inconsistent findings. This study aimed to analyze the association between parity and HPV DNA positivity among women in South Sumatra in 2024. A case-control design was conducted using secondary data from 212 subjects, consisting of 106 HPV DNA-positive cases and 106 HPV DNA-negative controls. Parity was categorized as <3 and ≥3. Data were analyzed using the Chi-square test, Fisher’s Exact Test, and logistic regression. The magnitude of association was expressed as an odds ratio (OR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI). The results showed that 70.28% of subjects had parity <3 and 29.72% had parity ≥3. The proportion of HPV DNA positivity was 53.69% among women with parity <3 and 41.27% among those with parity ≥3. Women with parity ≥3 had 0.606 times the odds of HPV DNA positivity compared with women with parity <3 (OR=0.606; 95% CI: 0.334–1.100; p=0.098). None of the potential confounding variables changed the parity OR by ≥10%. In conclusion, there was no statistically significant association between parity and HPV DNA positivity.
