Tumor and exercising muscle — the same metabolic pathways with opposite outcomes: a narrative review
By Evgheni Grusac, Dionisie Cebotari, Daniel Cristea and 3 others.
Abstract
KEY POINTS OF THE ARTICLE Question / Importance. Existing reviews catalogue the mediators of exercise. This review starts from the metabolic similarity between tumor and contracting muscle and identifies demand coupling and signal termination as what separates them. The research hypothesis Contracting muscle and malignant tissue run the same core metabolic program. What differs is control: in muscle it terminates with contractile demand; in the tumor it is oncogene-driven and non-terminating. Physical activity is proposed to re-impose a self-terminating pattern on it.
