The objectives of this study were to compare KMC with conventional newborn care (CNBC) and assess its effect on initiation of the first oral feeding attempt, weight gain, and duration of hospital stay in preterm low-birth-weight infants. Materials and Methods: A total of 90 hemodynamically stable preterm infants were randomized into two groups: 45 received KMC in addition to routine neonatal care, and 45 received CNBC. The primary outcomes were day of initiation of the first oral feeding attempt and duration of hospital stay.
Neonates in the KMC group had significantly earlier initiation of the first oral feeding attempt (mean difference: −0.82 days, 95% confidence interval [CI]: −1.16 to −0.49; P < 0.001) and a shorter duration of hospital stay (mean difference: −1.36 days, 95% CI: −2.66 to −0.06; P = 0.040). Additionally, infants receiving KMC had a lower incidence of sepsis (2.2% versus 6.7%) and significantly greater average daily weight gain (6.54 versus 3.17 g/day; P = 0.001). Early preterm infants received significantly longer KMC duration compared to late preterm infants ( P = 0.013).
KMC was associated with earlier initiation of the first oral feeding attempt, greater weight gain, and shorter hospital stay among preterm low-birth-weight infants.
