Paradoxically elevated HDL Cholesterol: Protective Biomarker or Dysfunctional Lipoprotein?
By Pramod Tulshidas Gitte and Milind Kharche.
Abstract
Extremely high HDL cholesterol is traditionally considered protective; however, emerging evidence suggests a paradoxical association with increased cardiovascular risk. We present a lean hypertensive patient with markedly elevated HDL in whom common secondary causes were not evident, highlighting that HDL functionality rather than concentration determines cardiovascular protection.
