Surgical management of a penetrating orbital injury with retained sugarcane stalk
By Soham S Pal, Vaishali L Une and Nilesh Mandle.
Abstract
Orbital trauma with retained intraorbital foreign bodies (IOFBs) is relatively rare but can lead to potentially blinding injuries. We herein report a case of a road traffic accident with a retained sugarcane IOFB managed at our institution. The patient underwent emergency surgical orbital exploration and successful removal of the retained IOFB with a robust postoperative outcome. Orbital complications following injury with an organic IOFB could be prevented by prompt surgical removal. Only two previous cases with retained sugarcane IOFB have been previously reported in the literature.
