Parkland Formula (Burns)
24-hour IV fluid resuscitation volume for burns.
Parkland Formula (Burns) calculator
Result
7000mL Ringer's Lactate in 24h
First 8h: 3500 mL. Next 16h: 3500 mL.
Time from time of burn (not time of arrival). Colloid (albumin) added in next 24h in many protocols.
How to use it
- 1
Parkland formula: 4 mL/kg × %TBSA. Use Ringer's Lactate. Count only partial- and full-thickness burns.
- 2
Half in first 8h from time of burn. If delayed: calculate remaining volume to give at correct rate.
- 3
Monitor urine output. Target 0.5–1 mL/kg/h. UO guide > formula — titrate infusion rate.
When to use it
- Major burns (TBSA ≥20%)
- Initiate Parkland formula immediately; transfer to burns unit.
- Paediatric burns (%TBSA ≥15%)
- Adapted Parkland with maintenance fluid; paediatric burns unit referral.
- Not for circumferential burns or inhalation
- Inhalation injury significantly increases fluid requirements — use formula as minimum.
