FRAX (Fracture Risk) calculator
Result
~10%10-yr major fx risk
Intermediate — DXA recommended
Simplified estimate. Use FRAX online tool (sheffield.ac.uk/FRAX) for country-specific calculation with BMD.
How to use it
- 1
For accurate FRAX: use the online tool with BMD. FRAX requires country-specific calibration and BMD at femoral neck for precise results.
- 2
10-year major osteoporotic fracture. Hip, spine, humerus, wrist. Separate hip fracture probability also calculated.
- 3
Threshold varies by guideline. UK NOGG: treatment threshold = 10-yr hip risk ≥3% or major risk ≥20% (age-adjusted).
When to use it
- Post-menopause or fragility fracture
- All women >50 with fragility fracture: DXA + FRAX.
- Long-term glucocorticoids
- ≥5 mg prednisolone for ≥3 months: FRAX underestimates risk (increase by 15%).
- DXA result integration
- FRAX + T-score −2.5 or worse: treat with bisphosphonate.
