Epworth Sleepiness Scale calculator
Result
0/24
Normal (0–10)
How to use it
- 1
0 = would never doze, 3 = high chance of dozing. Rate likelihood in each situation.
- 2
Score > 10. Abnormal — consider OSA, narcolepsy, idiopathic hypersomnia.
- 3
ESS + STOP-BANG. ESS measures sleepiness, STOP-BANG measures apnoea risk — use together.
When to use it
- OSA screening
- ESS > 10 + STOP-BANG ≥5: high pre-test probability for OSA.
- Driving fitness
- DVLA: ESS ≥ 11 in heavy vehicle drivers requires further assessment.
- CPAP monitoring
- ESS improvement after CPAP confirms symptomatic benefit.
