Palmar plating for displaced metacarpal neck fractures: A new technique
By Atiyya AN, Gadullah M, Alnaggar HE and 3 others.
Abstract
Purpose
To evaluate fixation of metacarpal neck fractures using miniplates applied via a palmar approach as an alternative to conventional dorsal plating, which carries a higher complication rate.
Methods
A prospective case series of 34 patients with acute unstable metacarpal neck fractures treated with palmar miniplating from 2018 to 2022.
Results
The mean follow-up was 25.79 months (range, 22-36 months). All fractures united in a mean of 5.4 weeks. Grip strength averaged 96% ± 4.01%, and ROM averaged 93% ± 4.25% compared to the contralateral hand. Minor complications occurred in 11.76% of cases.
Conclusion
In the short term, palmar miniplates for unstable metacarpal neck fractures result in excellent radiological and functional outcomes with minimal complications.
