Abstract
Background
Mitochondrial dysfunction is increasingly recognized as a bidirectional component of type 2 diabetes (T2D) and metabolic syndrome, linking nutrient excess, lipotoxicity, oxidative stress, inflammation, impaired insulin signaling, and pancreatic β-cell failure. However, its causal position and clinical actionability remain uncertain because mitochondrial abnormalities vary by tissue, disease stage, and metabolic phenotype.
