By Novia Hermandani and Irdawati.
Abstract
Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogenic bacterium that serves as an important parameter in microbiological safety testing of cosmetic products. The presence of this bacterium in cosmetics may reduce product quality and pose potential health risks to consumers. This study aimed to identify and evaluate the occurrence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in cosmetic products based on published research findings. The method used was a literature review by analyzing scientific articles discussing the detection of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in cosmetics and personal care products. The review showed that most tested cosmetic products, including liquid lipsticks, lip tints, organic masks, lotions, and other liquid cosmetics, were free from Pseudomonas aeruginosa contamination and met microbiological safety requirements. However, several studies indicated that water-based cosmetic products have a greater risk of microbial contamination than solid cosmetic products. Microbial contamination in cosmetics may be influenced by raw material quality, preservative effectiveness, manufacturing processes, storage conditions, and repeated product use. Based on the reviewed studies, it can be concluded that most cosmetic products currently available on the market meet microbiological safety standards; nevertheless, routine quality control and microbiological testing are still required to prevent Pseudomonas aeruginosa contamination and ensure consumer safety.
