Hospital de día en pediatría

Abstract
The diabetes day hospital (DDH) is becoming established as an intermediate outpatient care facility between conventional hospitalization and scheduled outpatient appointments. Its fundamental mission is to offer comprehensive, accessible, immediate, and highly specialized care to people with diabetes. This model of care, in addition to improving patients' quality of life and metabolic control, has been shown to substantially reduce avoidable hospital admissions, pressure on emergency services, and long-term healthcare costs. In this context, the Salta Maternal and Child Hospital (HPMI) stands out as a leader in pediatric and perinatal care for diabetes mellitus (DM). The center has a multidisciplinary team composed of specialists in pediatric DM, clinical pediatricians, nutritionists, nurses, and mental health professionals who coordinate both outpatient care and therapeutic education. In 2024, the HPMI Pediatric Day Hospital treated 233 patients and continues to support 70 adolescents in their gradual transition to the adult healthcare system. Its educational work is actively supported by Therapeutic Education Workshops. Adherence to follow-up appointments at the Pediatric Day Hospital is the cornerstone of clinical stability and overall well-being for children with type 1 diabetes. This intensive outpatient care model not only optimizes biological indicators but also transforms the psychosocial impact of the disease. Mental Health Benefits Reduction of diabetes-related distress. Continuous monitoring by psychologists and educators reduces anxiety, fear of hypoglycemia, and emotional exhaustion resulting from daily self-care. Strengthening of resilience. Guided learning equips children with effective coping tools, minimizing the risk of childhood depression and social isolation. Development of a sense of belonging Normalization of the condition. Sharing space with other children who use sensors or inject insulin eliminates the stigma of feeling "different" or ill. Creation of support networks. The Day Hospital acts as a community where children share experiences, tips, and emotions, validating each other's journeys. Guided transition to independence. Close and empathetic contact with the medical team fosters a positive identity, where the child proudly and responsibly takes control of their health.
