Adulto mayor, desafíos en la educación
By Gustavo Díaz.
Abstract
Older adults often experience difficulties maintaining behavioral changes following diabetes mellitus (DM) self-management education programs. These programs should address the role of emotions, psychological and physical resources, prior knowledge, and environmental and social influences in maintaining behavioral change with accessible resources. This is to promote the development of long-term management skills, including self-regulation, behavioral autonomy, intrinsic motivation, and habit formation. Since some individuals may also benefit from ongoing long-term support, active participation of the learner should be considered, allowing them to experience the theory firsthand. This should be approached through a multidisciplinary approach with ongoing sessions with peers and educators. Suggestions for ongoing support include progress monitoring, expert guidance, educational updates, opportunities for problem-solving, and motivational encouragement and support.
