Penile contact dermatitis following application of a traditional preparation containing Euphorbia coerulescens sap: a case report from the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa
By LD Scheepers, K Makamba and RS De Jager.
Abstract
Euphorbia species are widely distributed across southern Africa. Ocular and cutaneous reactions to their latex are well documented, but urogenital exposure is, to our knowledge, rarely reported. We describe a case of penile contact dermatitis in a 12-year-old boy following deliberate application of Euphorbia coerulescens (Blue Noors) sap as a traditional remedy intended to enlarge the penis and facilitate future circumcision. The lesions resolved completely within 14 days following decontamination, oral corticosteroids, antihistamines, and analgesia. This case highlights the importance of a thorough cultural history, prompt decontamination, and conservative management in a systemically well patient who can void.
