To analyze the scientific evidence on the use of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis by transgender women.
This is an Integrative Review, using a methodological framework, registered in Figshare, and with a guiding question based on the PICo strategy. The search for studies was carried out in the following information sources: CINAHL, LILACS, PubMed, SCOPUS and Web of Science, using controlled descriptors and keywords. The Classification of Levels of Evidence and three instruments for assessing methodological quality were used.
47 studies were included in this review. Of these, 28 were published in the United Stades of America, 12 in the United Kingdom, five in Switzerland, one in Canada and one in Australia, all in English and were published between 2015 and 2024. It was found that 15 of them were quantitative and cross-sectional, three were designed as a cohort and one was a randomized clinical trial, 23 were qualitative, and five had a mixed design. Four thematic categories were developed: knowledge, use or interest in Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis by transgender women; facilitators for the use of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis; obstacles to the use of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis; and strategies for improving the use of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis.
It is evident that, although Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis represents an effective strategy in the prevention of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus, transgender women still face significant barriers to their access and adherence, such as stigma in health services, misinformation and socioeconomic vulnerabilities. The importance of specific strategies and inclusive public policies that promote an equitable and culturally sensitive approach to tackling this infection in this population is reinforced.
