Abstract
Iatrogenic botulism is a rare form of botulism resulting from medical procedures involving the administration of botulinum toxin for therapeutic or cosmetic purposes. Aim – to analyze the clinical course of iatrogenic botulism after the BoNT/A administration for cosmetic purposes in a 58-year-old female patient. Material and methods. A clinical case analysis of iatrogenic botulism was conducted in patient E., aged 58, who was treated in the Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Unit Department of the Municipal Non-Profit Enterprise “Regional Infectious Disease Clinical Hospital” of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Council in 2025. Results. The paper presents a clinical observation of iatrogenic botulism case that developed in a 58-year-old female patient after the use of an unlicensed drug BoNT/A, which was used during a “full face” cosmetic procedure. The clinical case demonstrates the peculiarities of clinical manifestations, the difficulties in clinical diagnosis during the initial examination, the dynamics of iatrogenic botulism symptoms manifestation, as well as the slow neurological symptoms regression after specific treatment. It is noteworthy that the dynamics of the increase in clinical symptoms is much slower, in contrast to natural infection with the formation of food botulism, as well as a certain dissociation of clinical signs, in particular the absence of mydriasis throughout the disease. Conclusions. The clinical observation we have provided of iatrogenic botulism case that developed in a 58-year-old patient after the use of an unlicensed BoNT/A drug. The drug was used in a “full face” cosmetic procedure and demonstrates the characteristics of clinical manifestations, the difficulties in clinical diagnosis during the initial examination, the dynamics of the manifestation of symptoms of iatrogenic botulism, as well as the regression of neurological symptoms after specific treatment.
