Abstract
Aim. Hantavirus infection: epidemiology, transmission routes, current treatment approaches, and the situation in Ukraine and Europe Hantavirus infection remains an important zoonotic problem in Europe despite relatively low notification rates. Human infection is mainly associated with inhalation of aerosols contaminated with rodent excreta. In Europe, the dominant clinical form is haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome, primarily caused by Puumala virus. According to ECDC, 1,885 cases were reported in the EU/EEA in 2023, with Finland and Germany accounting for 60.5% of all cases. Current diagnostic strategies rely mainly on serological assays with molecular confirmation in selected cases. No broadly approved specific antiviral therapy or routine vaccine is currently available in Europe, therefore, treatment remains largely supportive. Open Ukrainian sources suggest sporadic case registration and probable underdiagnosis, underlining the need for stronger surveillance and clinician awareness.
