Abstract
The coexistence of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has attracted considerable attention because of the high risk of severe complications and mortality. Both conditions are associated with endothelial dysfunction and microcirculatory disturbances; however, their effects on target organs, particularly the liver, remain insufficiently understood. The aim of this study was to determine the morphological features of hepatic microcirculatory alterations and their clinical and laboratory characteristics in patients with COVID-19, T2DM, and coexisting COVID-19 and T2DM. A laboratory and morphological analysis of liver tissue was performed in 120 deceased patients divided into three groups: coexisting COVID-19 and T2DM, isolated COVID-19, and isolated T2DM. Histological examination was performed using standard methods, including selective fibrin staining according to the Zerbino-Lukasevich technique to differentiate fibrin of different degrees of maturity. Statistical analysis was performed using IBM SPSS Statistics 26.0 with Pearson's χ² test, the Lilliefors test, the Shapiro-Wilk test, and the Kruskal-Wallis test (p
