Awareness On The Use Of Sunscreen In Daily Life And Its Effects On Skin Health
By Ashish Uzgare and Fakeha Shaikh.
Abstract
Sunscreens are widely used for protecting the skin from the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation, but gaps in their proper use and application may reduce their effectiveness. The current survey was intended to examine public awareness, knowledge, perception, and practices concerning sunscreen use and its importance for skin health. A cross-sectional survey was carried out with the help of an online questionnaire comprising 18 questions from diverse backgrounds. Awareness regarding UV rays, SPF, sunscreen types, active ingredients, frequency of use, application, reapplication, benefits, and possible skin irritation was assessed. The results showed that most respondents were aware of sunscreen and the harmful effects of UV radiation, with 97% reporting awareness of sunscreen and 92% recognizing the harmful effects of UV rays. However, despite this high level of awareness, only 42% of respondents reported using sunscreen daily, while 63% applied it only once and 17% were unaware of the need for reapplication. The survey also identified gaps in knowledge regarding UVA and UVB rays, sunscreen ingredients, types of sunscreen, and proper application practices. Furthermore, 84% of respondents expressed interest in participating in sunscreen awareness programs. In conclusion, the findings indicate a clear gap between awareness and actual sunscreen-use practices. The results emphasize the need for greater public education regarding the correct selection, application, and reapplication of sunscreen to promote effective photoprotection and better long-term skin health.
