Abstract
Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a global health issue with a prevalence that continues to rise annually in both developed and developing nations. Diabetes cases are broadly classified into two categories: Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia resulting from insulin resistance and/or impaired insulin secretion. Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus affects not only glucose metabolism but also the hemostatic system, specifically platelet function and activity. This study aimed to compare platelet index values between patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and non-diabetic individuals. It was an observational analytic study employing a quantitative approach. The study population consisted of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus patients and non-diabetic individuals undergoing routine health check-ups at Pupuk Kaltim Hospital in Bontang City. The sample comprised 60 individuals meeting the inclusion and exclusion criteria—utilizing secondary data from 30 subjects in each group Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and non-diabetic selected via non-probability sampling. The results indicated that the Mean Platelet Volume (MPV) in T2DM patients was slightly lower than in non-diabetic individuals, though still within the normal range; conversely, Platelet Distribution Width (PDW), Platelet-Large Cell Ratio (P-LCR), and Plateletcrit (PCT) values were higher in T2DM patients compared to non-diabetic individuals. Statistical analysis revealed no significant differences in platelet index values between Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus patients and non-diabetic individuals.
