An in Vitro Study on Antidiabetic and Antiradical Activities of Flavonoid-Rich Fraction of Rubia Cordifolia
By U. Abdul Bashith.
Abstract
The main goal was to evaluate the in vitro antidiabetic and antiradical activities of the flavonoid-rich fraction of Rubia cordifolia. The plant extracts were studied for their effects on the inhibition of haemoglobin glycosylation and glucose transport across yeast cells. The percentage increase in the rate of glucose uptake into yeast cells was linear across the glucose concentrations used. The flavonoid-rich fraction of Rubia cordifolia showed the maximum increase at a 20 mM glucose concentration. Glycosylated haemoglobin is measured primarily to identify the average plasma glucose concentration over prolonged periods of time. The flavonoid-rich fraction of Rubia cordifolia plants inhibited the activities of α-amylase and α-glucosidase in a concentration-dependent manner, with results being comparable to the positive control. The results indicated that the selected plants possessed considerable in vitro antidiabetic and antiradical activity; however, these effects need to be confirmed in vivo for effective use as therapeutic agents.
