The effects of antigen-antibody complexes in allograft rejection
By R.L. Marquet.
Abstract
There has been a continuous dispute about the underlying mechanism of the phenomenon of specific unresponsiveness. Controversies have mainly centered around the question as to whether the presumed block in the immune response was located at afferent, central, or efferent levels. Evidence is accumulating that a central inhibitory mechanism is operating in the steady state phase of specific unresponsiveness, irrespective of whether the phenomenon is induced actively or passively. It has been noted that, during this phase, recipients are not completely unresponsive but may have cytotoxic effector lymphocytes, which indicates that blocking factors are operating. Although the nature of these blocking factors is still a matter of dispute the possibility is investigated that the central inhibition is produced by alloantibody complexed with antigen (Ag-Ab complexes).Chemicals/CAS: Antigen-Antibody Complex; Antilymphocyte Serum
