Abstract
Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic disease that commonly occurs in the elderly and can lead to various complications affecting quality of life. Physical and psychological changes and limitations in daily activities caused by this condition often influence the ability of older adults to perform daily living activities. This study aimed to determine the relationship between Diabetes Mellitus and quality of life among the elderly. This research employed a quantitative design with a cross-sectional approach. The population comprised elderly individuals diagnosed with Diabetes Mellitus, with purposive sampling based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were collected using questionnaires to assess respondent characteristics and quality of life. Data analysis was conducted using univariate analysis to describe frequency distributions and bivariate analysis using appropriate statistical tests to examine relationships between variables. The results showed that most elderly patients with Diabetes Mellitus had a moderate to low quality of life, particularly in physical and psychological aspects. Bivariate analysis indicated a significant relationship between Diabetes Mellitus and quality of life, where poorly controlled conditions were associated with lower quality of life. It can be concluded that Diabetes Mellitus is associated with declining quality of life among the elderly. Therefore, comprehensive disease management through education, glycemic control, family support, and regular monitoring is necessary to improve the quality of life of elderly patients with Diabetes Mellitus. Future studies should examine additional factors such as socioeconomic status, treatment adherence, and glycemic control using a longitudinal design. Comprehensive Diabetes Mellitus management integrating family support can improve the quality of life of the elderly.
