The Impact of Using a Patient Health Passport on Health Outcomes among Adults with Diabetes. A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
By Morais LP, Wilson H, Moore ZEH and 2 others.
Abstract
Introduction
Current evidence suggests that patient health passports may improve care for patients with chronic illnesses. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the impact of patient health passports on health outcomes in adults with diabetes.
Methods
A systematic review was conducted in February 2025 following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, using Ovid MEDLINE, Ovid EMBASE, EBSCO CINAHL, Web of Science, and Scopus. The review included studies of adult diabetic patients using paper or digital patient health passport as part of their care in comparison with the standard of care. Data were analysed using meta-analysis and a thematic analysis where appropriate; otherwise, the data are presented narratively. Quality appraisal was undertaken using the Cochrane Collaboration tool for assessing risk of bias and Evidence-based librarianship checklist. The certainty of the evidence was assessed using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation.
