Abstract
Background: The study aims to examine the Levels of birth preparedness among women of their first birth attending the Egyptian hospital. Methodology: The study was conducted at the Egyptian Hospital in Somalia. The target population will be 1100 women experiencing their first pregnancy attending the Egyptian hospital in Mogadishu, Somalia. It was a descriptive cross-sectional study to assess the level of birth preparedness and associated factors among expectant mothers attending antenatal at the hospital. Both qualitative and quantitative methods of data collection shall be employed. Simple random sampling of the expectant mothers attending care at the health facility shall be used to select them at the facility on a daily basis. RESULTS Most respondents, 249(87.1), knew that it is important to pack birth requirements for the baby, and only 35(12.2%) knew that it is important to know their blood group in preparation for birth. 236(83%) were well prepared for birth and 50(17%) were poorly prepared for birth. 264 (92.3%) heard about the birth preparedness plan, and 131(49.6%) respondents heard it from antenatal care. 202 (70.6%) had a birth preparedness plan, and 84 (29.4%) respondents did not have a birth preparedness plan. Whereas the majority of mothers, 242 (84.6%), knew their expected date of delivery, 212 (74.1%) didn’t have mama kits, and the majority expected to get them freely from the health facility. Conclusion This study established that the majority of mothers were well prepared for birth. Whereas most mothers reported having heard of birth preparedness, less than half of the respondents heard about it from antenatal care clinics. Recommendations Health workers in Health facilities should intensify health education talks during ANC clinics with special emphasis on birth preparedness and knowledge of danger signs.
