Standardized Screening for Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy as an Equity Intervention in Vulnerable Populations
By Jose J. Monsivais and Diane B. Monsivais.
Abstract
Diabetic peripheral neuropathy is a common and potentially disabling complication of diabetes, yet it often remains unrecognized and undertreated. For vulnerable populations experiencing a disproportionate burden of diabetes and barriers to equitable healthcare, inconsistent screening and treatment can contribute to preventable disparities. A standardized approach to diabetic peripheral neuropathy screening and subsequent treatment offers an opportunity to address these inequities. Consistent processes can help ensure that every eligible patient is assessed, that symptoms are documented using a common approach, and that treatment decisions are guided by current evidence rather than by inconsistent clinical practices. The purpose of this manuscript is to describe a set of validated instruments to be used in conjunction with a standardized screening approach for diabetic peripheral neuropathy, and provide a case study illustrating the use of the instruments.
