Point-of-Care Ultrasound Detected Congenital Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunt in a 6-Year-Old Child
By Gandla Alekhya and Thirunavukkarasu Arun Babu.
Abstract
Abstract Congenital intrahepatic portosystemic shunts (IPSSs) are rare vascular malformations characterized by abnormal communication between the portal venous system and systemic venous circulation. Although some patients remain asymptomatic, persistent shunts may lead to serious metabolic, neurological, and cardiopulmonary complications. Increasing use of abdominal imaging has resulted in more frequent incidental detection of these anomalies. We report a 6-year-old child with an incidentally detected IPSS identified during routine POCUS evaluation, highlighting the diagnostic considerations and follow-up strategies in asymptomatic patients.
