Hygiene 4.0: Proposing a Conceptual Framework for Artificial Intelligence in Hygiene Management
By Daniela Haluza.
Abstract
The growing integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into hygiene management is offering new opportunities to strengthen infection prevention in healthcare. From real-time environmental monitoring to predictive risk assessment, AI may support proactive, continuous, and data-driven approaches to hygiene practice. Building on the concepts of Industry 4.0 and Health 4.0, this Opinion article introduces the term Hygiene 4.0 as a conceptual framework for the integration of AI with digital, automated, and data-driven technologies into hygiene management. Applications include AI-supported hand hygiene surveillance, automated robotics-assisted disinfection, and machine learning for identifying patterns associated with healthcare-associated infections. While these technologies may augment human decision-making and improve the efficiency of hygiene processes, important ethical, legal, and operational challenges remain, including data governance, algorithmic transparency, and the risk of over-reliance on automated systems. A human-centered and interdisciplinary approach is essential to ensure that AI systems are trustworthy and aligned with evidence-based hygiene practices and regulatory standards. As a proposed conceptual framework, Hygiene 4.0 requires further empirical evaluation to determine its potential impact on infection prevention, patient safety, and public health.
