Screening of household contacts of tuberculosis cases needs strengthening
By Jagdish Chandra.
Abstract
Amita Gupta is very aptly titled-'Tuberculosis: so much accomplished and so much more to be done'.Dr. Gupta has highlighted that subsequent to the declaration of the End Tuberculosis Strategy of WHO in 2014, there has been strengthening of health systems in the field of tuberculosis (TB) with new developments in diagnostics and drug therapy.Nonetheless, all the cases of TB disease are not being recorded.Diagnostic delays are a reality which results in continuation of new transmission.1 Key observations made in context of prevention of TB include that nearly 40% of persons diagnosed with TB in the community are asymptomatic.2 The vulnerable groups are identified, and young children constitute a group being at the highest risk for acquiring TB disease after exposure.
