Abstract
Objective: To present a rare case of suspected non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy after administration of the second dose of AztraZeneca-Oxford vaccine.Observations: In the ocular examination, the initial clinical findings of a lower altitudinal defect with segmental edema of the optic disc and no visual recovery were consistent with the diagnosis of non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy. The temporal relationship with vaccination suggested a possible inflammatory or immune-mediated component, being treated with steroid therapy that prevented progressive loss of vision.More than 50 cases of post-vaccination optic neuropathy against COVID-19 have been described in the literature, with non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy being an uncommon adverse event. Conclusions: Alert clinicians to consider vaccination with AstraZeneca-Oxford product as a possible etiology in those patients who show visual loss and optic disc edema after its administration.
