Abstract Purpose: This study examined whether skeletal muscle mass and related body-composition variables predict near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS)-derived muscle oxygenation (SmO₂) responses and physical performance in adolescent badminton athletes.

In this observational cross-sectional study with a repeated-measures field component, ten male adolescent badminton athletes (age 13.9 ± 1.3 y; body mass 54.7 ± 8.8 kg; height 169.2 ± 9.8 cm) completed body-composition assessment by bioelectrical impedance analysis, a badminton-specific exercise protocol with NIRS monitoring (Moxy, vastus lateralis) during baseline, exercise and recovery, and a battery of field performance tests (vertical jump, agility, repeated sprint ability, and 20-m shuttle-run estimated VO₂max). We considered associations using Spearman correlations and univariable ordinary least-squares regression, with effect sizes and 95% confidence intervals.
Skeletal muscle index (SMI) correlated strongly with mean anaerobic power (ρ = 0.84, P = 0.002, R² = 0.87), vertical jump (ρ = 0.77, P = 0.009, R² = 0.69) and SmO₂ desaturation magnitude (ρ = 0.70, P = 0.026, R² = 0.50). Fat-free mass showed the strongest association with vertical jump (ρ = 0.85, P = 0.002). SmO₂ declined from a baseline of 74.8 ± 5.9% to a nadir of 8.6 ± 7.1% and partially recovered to 65.3 ± 11.8%. Greater muscle mass was linked to larger desaturation capacity rather than impaired recovery.
