An Offering of Fullness: A Surgeon's Reflection on Calling and Surrender
By Michael Adly Mikhail.
Abstract
Christian health professionals often speak about calling as though it arrives in a single moment of clarity. In my experience, it did not. This commentary reflects on my journey from a consultant vitreoretinal surgeon in the United Kingdom to building Rwanda's public sector vitreoretinal surgery service and local capacity. That journey did not begin with a dramatic revelation. It began with my wife's words before we were married, deepened through a graduation address about a surgeon with broken hands, and was formed quietly during a year of waiting in which I prayed the Jesus Prayer daily and listened to the teachings of Father Matthew the Poor (Father Matta El-Meskeen in Arabic) on the calling of Abraham. In my own experience, Christian vocation in medicine was not simply a career decision accompanied by spiritual motivation. Rather, it was a form of surrender that accumulated slowly, spoke through unexpected voices, and asked me to move before I fully understood where I was going. The question for those who are still waiting is not whether they are ready. It is whether they are listening.
