Orofacial Manifestations Associated with Systemic Sclerosis: A Narrative Review
By Mi-Sun Kong and Hong‐Seop Kho.
Abstract
Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is an uncommon, multisystem connective tissue disease characterized by a triad of tissue fibrosis, vascular abnormalities, and immune dysregulation.SSc frequently presents in the fifth decade of life and mainly affects women.SSc patients may present a wide spectrum of orofacial manifestations. The most frequent orofacial manifestations include microstomia, xerostomia, dental caries, gingival recession, telangiectasia, and mandibular bone resorption.Orofacial manifestations of SSc are common yet underdiagnosed.Recognizing early diagnostic indicators is therefore crucial, followed promptly by coordinated multidisciplinary interventions. This review outlines the broad range of orofacial manifestations in SSc patients and proposes clinical insights to address the persistent complexities of oral management.
