Are We Really Sterile? Bacterial Contamination Rates During Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction
By Kathryn E. Greskovich BS, Parker A. Cavendish MD, Eric M. Milliron MD and 5 others.
Abstract
Background
While rare, infection is a devastating complication of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction (ACLR). Further, biofilm formation and subclinical ACL graft colonization by bacteria are more common and can alter graft biomechanical properties, theoretically increasing the risk of failure. Hypothesis/Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore which intraoperative points may pose the greatest risk of graft contamination. We hypothesized that bacterial contamination of surgical gloves would be common after draping and immediately before graft passage. Study Design: Descriptive laboratory study.
