Abstract
Abstract Introduction Prior studies have evaluated return-to-sport rates after hip arthroscopy for femoroacetabular impingement (FAI), but data on return to work remain limited. Understanding both outcomes is critical for patient counseling and expectation management. Objective To report rates and timing of return to work and sport following hip arthroscopy with labral repair for FAI. Study Design Case series; Level of evidence, 4 Methods A retrospective review of prospectively collected data was conducted on patients who underwent hip arthroscopy with labral repair from 2018 to 2023. Patients aged 18-64 were evaluated preoperatively and postoperatively with a minimum 2-year follow-up, utilizing the Hip Outcome Score (HOS) and Hip SANE score. Return to work and/or sport was assessed via patient-reported outcomes at follow-up, including the level of activity to which patients returned. Results Ninety-one patients were included with an average follow-up of 3.2 years. The mean age was 38.2 years, 68.1% of patients were female, and mean BMI was 25.8. The overall return to work rate was 95.6% with an average return to full duty work at 3.3 months. Return-to-work rates were 100% at 6 weeks for low-demand occupations, 94.3% at 4 months for moderate-demand occupations, and 91.3% at 5.2 months for high-demand occupations. The return-to-sport percentages are reported based on each patient’s self-selected primary sport. Return to linear sports was 85.3%, return to lateral/multidirectional sports was 64.7%, and return to rotational sports was 89.3%. The overall return to sport rate was 82.3%, while 16.4% were able to return at an even higher level than before surgery. Conclusion Patients who underwent hip arthroscopy with labral repair for FAI had a high rate of return to work and sport. These results establish clinically useful recovery timelines and return benchmarks to guide rehabilitation and clearance for return to work and sport after hip arthroscopy for FAI.
