The Lancet Microbe
Transmission potential of Andes virus
By Andrei R. Akhmetzhanov, Jonathan G. Dushoff and Robin N. Thompson.
Abstract
We read with interest the Comment published in The Lancet Microbe by Jason R Andrews and Isaac I Bogoch,1 who highlighted that the largest Andes virus outbreaks are driven by rare superspreading events, whereas most outbreaks undergo rapid stochastic extinction. This finding implies that widespread transmission is unlikely. We agree and note that the basic reproduction number, R0, might be lower than they estimated, further strengthening this conclusion.
