Infection Prevention in Practice
Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Non-Tuberculous Mycobacteria and other Gram negative organisms in healthcare water and wastewater systems
By Teresa Inkster, R. Beattie, A. Farrow and 1 others.
Abstract
This paper describes current guidance documents relevant to the management of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) and Non-Tuberculous Mycobacteria (NTMs) in hospital water systems. Relevant engineering aspects are highlighted, including the interpretation of water testing results. There are increasing reports of healthcare water related incidents/outbreaks and we discuss relevant investigations and control measures for infection control teams involved with the management of these. Newer concepts such as drain related outbreaks and reduced water care are also discussed.
