Experimental models of chemically induced osteoporosis in zebrafish: A systematic review
By Vishwani Vishwanath Naik, Beere Vishnusai, Sandra K S and 5 others.
Abstract
Background
Osteoporosis is a progressive metabolic bone disorder characterised by microarchitectural deterioration and reduced bone mass, increasing the risk of fractures. While rodent models are commonly used in preclinical research, zebrafish ( Danio rerio ) has emerged as an alternative due to its high genetic homology with humans, rapid development, optical transparency, and cost-effectiveness. Several chemically induced zebrafish models have been developed to mimic various phenotypes of osteoporosis, and their use is increasing. The purpose of this review is to systematically compare the chemicals used to induce osteoporosis in zebrafish.
