Urology ST3 National Selection: Tips for Success and Insights From Newly Appointed Registrars
By Michael George, Stefanos Gkaliamoutsas, Theodora Stasinou and 2 others.
Abstract
Summary Start early and plan strategically: Familiarise yourself with the person specification and self‐assessment criteria well in advance of the application cycle. Portfolio development is most effective when approached incrementally throughout training rather than as a last‐minute effort. Be proactive in creating opportunities: Competitive applications rarely develop by chance. Seek out audits, quality improvement projects, research opportunities, teaching roles, leadership experiences, and operative exposure by approaching colleagues and supervisors directly. Prepare for interview with structure and consistency: Treat interview preparation with the same discipline as a postgraduate examination. Regular revision, repeated mock interviews, and support from peers and senior colleagues can substantially improve both knowledge and confidence. Recognise that setbacks are part of the process: In our experience, reapplication is common among many candidates. Reflecting on areas for improvement, adapting your approach, maintaining perspective, and prioritising personal wellbeing are all important components of navigating the journey to Urology ST3 successfully.
