Resumen
The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of training based on optimal power load with 3 or 6 weekly sets for squat (SQ) and deadlift (DL). Fourteen athletes (5 females) with a mean age of 17.86 ± 1.46 years were divided into two groups (3S and 6S) who performed 3 or 6 sets of 6 repetitions of DL and SQ, respectively. Mean Propulsive Velocity (MPV) and Relative Optimal Power (ROP) variables in DL and SQ were evaluated with a progressive load test. Data from the repetition with the highest absolute power during the test were retained for analysis. The T-test was used to compare the pre moment data between the two groups and the difference between pre and post moments for each group. Cohen's d was calculated for effect size. The significance level was set at p > 0.05. Groups were similar for all variables at pre-moment. In pre vs post comparisons, only significant improvement was observed in the ROP of SQ for the 6S group (28.83w/kg vs 33.22w/kg; p = 0.01; d = 1.47). Only the group performing a higher training volume, 6S, showed improvement in power performance. Therefore, it seems that a higher volume over a 4-week training period is necessary to generate power gains in this population. Future studies should be conducted to verify if these differences directly impact sports performance.
