Silicoanthracosis: A melanoma mimicker
By Sriselvakumar S, Hanley M and Dulku G.
Abstract
Silicoanthracosis is a type of fibrotic lung disease resulting from prolonged inhalation of silica particles. The silica particles can trigger an inflammatory response resulting in subsequent fibrotic changes which may lead to anthracotic black pigmentation of the airways or lymph nodes. We present the interesting case of an incidental finding of lymphadenopathy related to silicosis with surprising visible black pigmentation of the biopsied specimen, an important differential diagnosis for visibly pigmented lymph nodes.
