Abstract / Summary
Urinary tract infection (UTI) is one of the healthcare-associated infections that may occur in hospitalized patients, particularly in patients with urinary catheters. Appropriate catheter care is important to prevent infection. This study aimed to determine the effect of urinary catheter care using soap with the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) method on the prevention of UTI in inpatients at Murni Teguh Memorial Hospital in 2021. This study used a quasi-experimental design with a post-test only control group. The sample consisted of 44 patients, with 22 patients in the intervention group receiving catheter care using soap with the AACN method and 22 patients in the control group receiving standard catheter care. Data were collected in March–April 2021 and analyzed using the Wilcoxon test. In the intervention group, 20 respondents (90.9%) did not experience UTI and 2 respondents (9.1%) experienced UTI. In the control group, 18 respondents (81.8%) did not experience UTI and 4 respondents (18.2%) experienced UTI. The statistical test showed p=0.02 (p<0.05), indicating a significant effect of urinary catheter care using soap with the AACN method on UTI prevention. The majority of respondents were aged 50–59 years and female.
