Consideraciones sobre la clínica y el manejo del síndrome del túnel carpiano
By Leonardo Martínez Aparicio, Lázaro Martínez Aparicio and Thalía Valdés Caraballo.
Abstract
Introduction
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a neuropathy caused by symptomatic compression of the median nerve at the wrist; its diagnosis and management remain controversial.
Objective
This study aims to provide an updated analysis of the clinical and management aspects of this condition.
Method
The historical, epidemiological, pathophysiological, clinical, and management bases were analyzed using journals and websites from sites such as SciELO and Infomed; 28 articles were referenced.
Results
Mechanical compression of the median nerve explains the origin of the symptoms and signs, but it does not explain how the different etiologies lead to this compression. Initially, symptoms are usually fluctuating and predominantly nocturnal, associated with decreased sensation in the fingers, except for the fifth.
Conclusions
There are maneuvers and complementary tests that support the diagnosis. Management can be conservative or surgical; in the latter, endoscopic and open approaches are used.
