Abstract
Background: The radiology department is a service unit that has adopted digital systems to enhance operational efficiency. PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System) is a medical image management system that facilitates rapid, secure data access without the need for film printing. Although PACS has been implemented at RSUD dr. R. Soetijono Blora, its utilization has not yet been optimized. This study aims to examine radiograph management as well as the advantages and disadvantages of the PACS system. Methods: This study employed a qualitative method with a case study approach at the Radiology Department of RSUD dr. R. Soetijono Blora between February and June 2025. Data were collected through observation, document review, and interviews with three radiographers and one radiologist. Data analysis involved transcription, data reduction, coding, categorization, theme identification, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. Results: The study results indicate that PACS is utilized for digital radiograph management, offering benefits such as reduced film usage, cost and storage space savings, easy image access, faster interpretation by physicians, and integration with the Hospital Information System (SIM-RS). The DICOM standard supports data security and compatibility. However, utilization remains suboptimal due to challenges such as network disruptions, system errors, reliance on electricity and connectivity, and limited access for external parties, such as referral hospitals and patients. Conclusion: PACS implementation enhances the efficiency, integration, and quality of radiology services; however, optimization of infrastructure and system access is required to support the sustainable utilization of PACS.
